Is the Hollywood Theatre Haunted?
Over 100 years of history adds as much mystery to the Hollywood Theatre as it does beauty. Its handful of ghost stories reported over the years also contributes to the enigmatic shroud blanketing the historic theatre. No one knows who these otherworldly figures might be or what they could be connected to, yet this movie theatre leaves patrons with their hair standing on end, and it’s not just because of the cinematic climax of the show they’re watching.
History of the Hollywood Theatre
The Hollywood Theatre came to life on July 17, 1926, with the showing of the silent film, “More Pay — Less Work.” It was a 1500-seat movie theatre complete with an eight-piece orchestra and organist. While movie theatres had already been open for some time in America, the Hollywood Theatre set itself apart with its impressive architecture and function as both a movie theatre and vaudeville house.
Designed by the architectural firm, Bennes and Herzog, the theatre featured an embellished Mediterranean front facade with a Spanish Baroque entry pavilion, adorned with arched niches, turned pillars, and multicolored terracotta. Its distinguished design was only matched by the theatre’s reputation. At the height of its popularity, an ad described it as “a palace of luxury, comfort, and entertainment surpassed by any theatre on the coast.” The venue’s popularity was so significant that Portland’s Hollywood District ultimately took its name from the theatre.
Today, the Hollywood Theatre stands as a cherished historically-registered site in the city of Portland. It is also the last venue in Portland to be built as a theatre and vaudeville house. The theatre has recently been the focus of restoration efforts to restore much of the immersive entry experience for guests that was stripped away in the 1960s.
The Hollywood Theatre now hosts over 450 events every year. It also boasts a national reputation for its award-winning film programming, ingenious educational programs, and fiscal support for local filmmakers. The theatre shows classic and contemporary films, hosts live performances and special guests, and produces groundbreaking TV series such as Queer Horror, B-Movie Bingo, and Kung Fu Theatre.
Hauntings Overview
It’s unknown if anything tragic happened at the Hollywood Theatre. However, with over 100 years of history within its walls, one wonders if there are dark moments hidden within its crevices, especially with stories of ghosts known to roam the historic theatre.
One story revolves around the upstairs lobby area, where guests have reportedly seen the ghostly apparition of a well-dressed man floating around. It’s also been said that moviegoers have seen the unsettling apparition of a woman who sits in the back row of one of the upstairs screening rooms.
Staff and guests have also reported being tapped on the shoulder while hearing unintelligible words being whispered into their ears. To their fright, they discover that no one is there or even in the same room with them when they turn around. Could it be the same well-dressed specter floating around upstairs? Guests have also reported feeling a sense of uneasiness going up the staircase to the upstairs theatre. One in particular claimed she felt various cold spots in the building.
Got a Light?
In stark contrast to when the theatre was built, smoking is not permitted on the premises. However, that doesn’t stop another of the theatre’s other ghostly female patrons. She’s been described as a blonde woman wearing high heels, nervously pacing up and down the halls and smoking a cigarette.
A self-claimed medium stated that the woman forever waits for her husband to pick her up from work, not knowing he had been killed in a car accident on the way to pick her up. Whether you’re a believer or not, it does pull at our curiosity if there’s some truth in this haunting theory.
